NOTES
In 1968, owing to fragile health, Rothko was advised to stop painting on large-scale canvases and to work on the lighter, more portable surface of paper. Here the artist explored a new format in which the sheet of paper is divided into two distinct zones: a black area in the upper two-fifths of the composition sits over a gray space. Rothko’s vigorous black-brown strokes emphasize his continued energy in these late acrylic works.
