NOTES
A dark brown square in the upper three-fifths of this composition rests above a gray rectangle. Rothko has left the border of his paper surface unpainted, highlighting this edge with lively brushstrokes. In this way he draws attention to the tonal depth within each color field. The artist produced a large number of acrylics in the final two years of his life, ensuring their significance as a final chapter of his richly creative career.
