NOTES
In the 1960s, Gerhard Richter began experimenting with the industrial printing techniques used in this print. Here, Richter altered a postcard image of a building to create a circle of light at the center. He then had the image printed out of register, or misaligned, resulting in a blurred effect that lends a sense of mystery and drama. By using a common illustration as a starting point, Richter intended his print to be an amusing commentary on the relationship between commercial and fine art.
