NOTES
Siblings from the coal mining town of Superior, West Virginia, gather in their best clothes for photographer Moneta Sleet Jr. In 1953, Sleet was on assignment for Our World magazine to photograph the lifestyles of African American coal miners and their families. Children and their honest expressions remained one of Sleet’s favorite subjects. For this photo, he positioned himself at the children’s eye-level in order to best connect with them.
