Notes:
The main source for this provenance is the Pulitzer collection catalog [Chetham, Charles Scott. "Modern Painting, Drawing & Sculpture Collected by Louise and Joseph Pulitzer, Jr." Cambridge, MA: Fogg Art Museum, vol. 2, 1958, cat. 91]. Exceptions and other supporting documents are noted.
[1] The Galerie Maeght originated in a department store in Cannes, France, which opened in 1936 and was run by Aimé Maeght and his wife Marguerite. Gradually the store began to sell paintings. After the war, the Maeght's relocated to Paris, and opened their gallery ["Galerie Maeght, Barcelona," The National Gallery of Art, accessed October 18, 2006,]. Galerie Maeght likely acquired the painting directly from the artist.
[2] A label on the back of the painting reading "SS" confirms that the work was in the possession of Sam Salz.
[3] Deed of Gift from Joseph Pulitzer Jr. dated November 28, 1956 [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Administrative Board of Control and the Advisory Committee of the City Art Museum, December 13, 1956.
