NOTES
Édouard Manet’s portrait depicts the fashionable Madame Jules Guillemet, a close friend and frequent model, wearing a beribboned black bonnet and high-necked black jacket. Manet paid careful attention to the materials of the hat, rendering the folds of the ribbon in blue and green, and highlighting the sheen of the material. The ribbon is held in place by a large gold buckle, popular in similarly styled bonnets from the 1880s.

Notes:
The primary source for this provenance is Rouart’s 1975 catalogue raisonné, cat. no. 36. [Rouart, Denis, and Daniel Wildenstein. “Edouard Manet: Catalogue raisonné. Tome II: Pastels, aquarelles, et dessins.” Paris: La Bibliothéque des arts, 1975, p. 14, cat. no. 36]. Exceptions and other supporting documents are listed.

[1] The 1902 catalogue by Théodore Duret lists the pastel as belonging to M. Viau, Paris [Duret, Théodore. “Histoire d’Édouard Manet et de son oeuvre: avec un catalogue des peintures et des pastels.” Paris: M. Floury, 1902, cat. no. 11]. Rouart’s catalogue raisonné lists M. Viau as “Dr. Georges Viau.”

[2] See the auction catalog ["Collection de M. George Viau [Pt. 1] Catalogue des tableaux modernes, pastels et aquarelles: œuvres de Boudin, Cals, Carrière, ..., composant la collection de M. George Viau." Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, March 4, 1907, lot no. 87].

[3] The 1932 catalogue by Paul Jamot and Georges Wildenstein lists Mrs. Montgomery Sears of Boston as the current owner of the pastel [Jamot, Paul and Georges Wildenstein. “Manet.” Paris: Les Beaux Arts, 1932, p. 171, cat no. 430]. The invoice from M. Knoedler & Co., Inc. (see note [5]) corroborates this ownership, and also lists Mrs. Sears’s daughter, Mrs. J.D. Cameron Bradley, by inheritance.

[4] In the M. Knoedler & Co. commission book 4, the pastel is listed as belonging to the property of J.A. Davidson for the entry dated December 11, 1950. It is listed as no. CA3754. [M. Knoedler & Co. records, approximately 1848-1971, The Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, Accession no. 2012.M.54; copy, SLAM document files].

[5] Invoice from M. Knoedler and Co., Inc., dated April 24, 1951 [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Administrative Board of Control of the City Art Museum, May 18, 1951.
