NOTES
The buxom Madame Leonie’s heavily made-up face, which borders on garish, brings to life a powerful sense of sexuality. In the early 1920s Otto Dix created a large body of watercolors depicting the prostitutes, wounded soldiers, and performers who were common sights in post-World War I Germany. These quickly-rendered portraits were made for easy sales, and Dix used whatever materials he had on hand—in this case the backside of a drawing pad cover.
