NOTES
Though he was more known for his angular and expressionistic imagery, the German artist Max Beckmann made this tender and delicate pencil study early in his career. In this portrait of his first wife, Minna Beckmann-Tube, he renders her head, forearm, and hand with subtle highlights and shading. The amount of detail contrasts with the simple outlines of her body, chair, and sewing materials.
