NOTES
In this watercolor, Marc Chagall portrayed his hometown Vitebsk in vivid primary colors, lending a fanciful air to this scene of everyday life. Though he settled in France in 1923, Chagall’s work was firmly embedded in his Russian and Jewish roots. He often depicted Vitebsk, where after the Russian Revolution he was briefly named Commissar for the Arts. He wrote his autobiography in 1921 while still in Russia, which may have helped inspire this drawing’s nostalgic mood.
