NOTES
Striding confidently forward with Bible in hand and enveloped in the folds of his billowing cape, this idealized portrait of a venerated early settler conveys the fortitude and strength of character associated with America's colonial founders. So popular was the original statue that by the late 1890s, Augustus Saint-Gaudens resolved to make reductions of the full-sized work to answer the demands of private patrons. This sculpture is one of his reduced-size versions of one of his most important public monuments.
