NOTES
A brooding man’s face and hands float in the inky black of night. Made from a hand-carved block of wood, this print shows rough gouges and wood grain, techniques Norwegian Edvard Munch used to strengthen his art’s psychological intensity. Members of the German artist group Die Brücke (The Bridge) imitated Munch’s techniques in their early woodcuts, prompting a critic in 1908 to describe the young artists as “spirits who band together around Munch.”
