NOTES
An outstanding example of the repoussé technique, this relief was created by hammering the metal from the back. Details such as facial features, anatomy, and surface textures were the result of using a tool that incised the metal from the front to make them more legible. Note how many different textures can be discerned, including those in the clothing, the dove’s feathers, the hair on the angels’ heads, Jesus’ beard, and the wood of the cross. The result is a showcase of the many ways a sharp tool can change a metal surface to create different visual effects. The Renaissance owner of this relief would have appreciated its extraordinary artisanship.
