NOTES
The refined intellect of the sitter is evident in this sensitive portrait. A Chilean diplomat, author, and painter, Ramón Subercaseaux was a member of the artistic set that was Sargent's preferred clientele. Early in Sargent's career, Subercaseaux commissioned a full-length portrait of his wife, which won Sargent one of his first medals at the Paris Salon in 1881. The inscription dedicates the work to Subercaseaux's wife.
