1996 -
Saint Louis Art Museum, given by The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation [2]

Notes:
[1] A 1980 exhibition catalogue indicates that the piece was lent by the Estate of Joseph Cornell [McShine, Kynaston, ed. "Joseph Cornell." New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1980, p. 291]. All works of art in the possession of Cornell at the time of his death were transferred to his estate, which is also known as The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation [Lufkin, Martha. "Art and law: Antagonism may soon cease." The Art Newspaper 75 (November 1997): 10]. No additional provenance information was given by the Foundation [list of objects, SLAM document files]. It is likely that the sandbox was always in Cornell's possession.
