NOTES
The coat of arms that adorns the upper part of this snuff rasper (grater) demonstrates an aspect of the heraldic arts called "cadency." The first-born son was entitled to use the arms of the father, but added a bar with three horizontal appendaged signifying his position as heir. The bar appears at the top of the shield, above the three fleurs de lis, long associated with the French royal house.
