NOTES

The color contrast between the green background and the sitter’s orange gown gives this portrait a sense of energy. With pearls askew, her sheer scarf fluttering behind, and her straight posture, this sitter communicates confidence and liveliness of spirit. Contemporaries praised these qualities as desirable attributes for young women.
