NOTES
Christoffel Jegher collaborated with the great seventeenth century Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens to produce nine woodcuts that capture the bold energy of Ruben's style. This composition closely corresponds to the right side of a painting by Rubens, The Holy Family with Saints (Prado, Madrid), which presents the Christ child sleeping on Mary's lap in a beautiful forest. Two putti push forward a lamb, while another one motions them to keep quiet. In the background, Joseph sleeps against a tree while the donkey grazes nearby.
