NOTES
This relief preserves some of the original red and black paint and serves to dispel the myth that stone sculpture in antiquity was white. The idea of pure white marble and stone was a 19th-century invention; in reality the ancient world was full of rich, vibrant color. The addition of painted details to such a deeply carved relief would have contributed a dramatic decorative element to the architectural space it once occupied.
