NOTES
In this state of the print Beckmann removes the studio background. He replaces the lamp in the previous state with the figure of a cat, which formerly had rested in his arms. A vase or lamp and an open receptacle have been added at the right. The artist's tie has been broadened and additional lines have been drawn along the brim of his hat. The result is greater contrast in light and dark, especially in the background and the face, which help make this one of his best-known self-portraits.
