NOTES
Bright shapes across the upper half of this painting are offset at top and bottom by delicate patchworks of pale gray and white. Kenzo Okada softened the outlines with loose brushwork and deposited small drips and flecks of paint across the canvas.
Art critics of the time connected his balanced, asymmetrical compositions and muted color palette to traditional Japanese aesthetics that emphasized natural colors and intentionally imperfect forms. Okada trained in Paris and worked for many years as a figurative painter in Japan before moving to New York in the 1950s.
