NOTES
Red and blue curves meander across three canvases, set off against open expanses of white. This example by Willem de Kooning shows the artist’s continued exploration of issues he began to address in his Abstract Expressionist canvases in the 1940s, such as line, color, and brushstroke. Here de Kooning’s gestures are more spare and lyrical than his earlier work. This painting which the artist made at age 80, was originally conceived for the wall behind the altar of St. Peter’s Church in New York, although it was never installed there.
