NOTES
Strong color and bold patterns characterize carpets from the Caucasus, whose rug- producing peoples include Christian Armenian groups as well as Muslim, Turkic, and Kurdish tribes. The hooked lozenge in the border and center medallions of this rug is a device often found in rugs from the Kazak region, but the floating elements surrounding the medallions are an unusual feature. The U-shaped element at the top of the rug is a mihrab, or arch, which identifies it as a prayer rug.
