NOTES
This painting features a fractured depiction of cows split into three horizontal sections, or “stripes,” as referred to in the title. This stripe motif is repeated throughout the painting, for example, in the skeletal ribs of the animals. Georg Baselitz’s early work shocked sensibilities due to the artist’s raw, expressive approach and sometimes disturbing subject matter. Here the severing of the cows echoes the violent act of slaughter, a notion with specific reverberations in Germany after the horrors of the Holocaust.
