NOTES
Blinky Palermo made this collage using greenish-gray board, purple watercolor, and strips of newspaper. His minimalist approach emphasizes the fundamental elements of art: color, shape, line, and texture. The strips of newspaper add a formal quality to the more expressive purple streaks. Palermo's composition creates a subtle tension between opacity and translucence. Dated June 1918, the newspaper snippets were taken from a publication, Düsseldorfer Zeitung, which covered Germany's involvement in World War I. These excerpts report skirmishes by U-boats and ring of false optimism five months before Germany's surrender.
