NOTES
This watercolor depicts a German war memorial built in Bitola, Macedonia, to commemorate fallen soldiers from World War I. Kiefer's title "The Painter's Studio," is meant to transform the meaning of the site from one associated with death to one of creativity. Like many of Kiefer's works, the subject of the painting focuses on major historical events or places that have had a role in his native Germany.
