NOTES
Markus Lüpertz conceived of this drawing as a play of narrative combinations. The artist suggested that the three red forms, instead of representing a lamp-post, heart, and kite, could stand for a man, woman, and child. Lüpertz said: "This one is about a nocturnal encounter. It has to do with the pain caused by love. Yet it also deals with chiaroscuro (shading) and shadow. The story can be reinvented every time you look at it. There are hundreds of possible variations."
Provenance

Notes:
The primary source of provenance is Betsy Millard [information for appraisals form, SLAM document files]. Other supporting documents are listed below.
[1] The graphite inscription "GMW 65" is visible on the verso of the frame's backing board.
[2] A Mary Boone Gallery label is affixed to the frame's backing board. Ron Warren from the Mary Boone Gallery states in an E-mail dated April 6, 2007 addressed to Museum researcher Sydney Norton that the drawing came to the gallery directly from the artist in 1984 [SLAM document files]. However, the graphite inscription cited in note [1] and the provenance history on the information appraisal form suggest that the drawing was in Michael Werner's collection before it came to the Mary Boone Gallery.
[3] The terms of this partial and promised gift are detailed in the contract between Betsy Millard and the Saint Louis Art Museum [Gift and Loan Agreement between Betsy Millard and SLAM, signed (no day or month) 2003, [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Collections Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, June 3, 2003.
