NOTES
Eugen Schönebeck based this drawing on a photograph of Richard Sorge, a Communist spy who worked for the Soviet government in Europe and Asia. Schöenbeck said: "I was intrigued by Sorge…I wouldn't go so far as to say I admired him, but I found his decision to dedicate his life to a political cause worthy of respect." The characters inscribed in the upper left corner of the drawing refer to the spy's personal and political history in the Far East.
