NOTES
The Chinese characters on this censer are ancient Sanskrit text and covered in gold. Precious metal also highlights petals on the lotus-shaped base, which is supported by gilded frogs. This remarkable object was made on commission by one of the most famous bronze designers of the late Ming. The patron was likely a Tibetan Buddhist temple or a devotee of that religious sect. Oversized and sitting on an elaborate matching stand, such a work was costly.
