NOTES
The bold, gestural patterns of this tablecloth suggest that it was designed by the German artist Peter Behrens. Like many of the foremost designers working at the turn of the 20th century, Behrens practiced a number of artistic endeavors. He was a founding member of the Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk (United Workshops for Art in Handcraft) in Munich. By 1901, he had become a highly regarded designer of furniture, ceramics, glass, typography, textiles, and architecture.

Although we have not yet been able to confirm whether this machine-woven tablecloth is by Behrens, its noble linear quality bears a strong resemblance to the graphics and other textiles he designed.
