NOTES
Cameron Martin often uses advertising imagery as sources for his paintings. This work depicts an actual volcano, Mount St. Helens, while also referencing the fictional mountainscape of the Paramount Pictures logo. Although the painting is handmade, the surface’s crisp, manufactured quality suggests the assistance of digital media and references the artificiality of the tourist image. The title, Remission, likens the landscape to a body with a dormant illness that may unexpectedly recur.
