NOTES
Colorfully dressed peasants, who fish on the riverbank alongside rafts of water lilies, animate this landscape. While this painting was likely completed in his studio, Charles-François Daubigny’s work was informed by devoted outdoor study; he even constructed a studio boat in 1857. Daubigny was considered the greatest river painter of mid-19th century France, and this painting is characteristic of his popular scenes of pastoral calm. The work was exhibited at the 1863 Salon, the government-sponsored art exhibition.

Notes:
[1] Monsieur Périer, the deputy mayor of Épernay, was one of Daubigny's good clients [Fidell-Beaufort, Madeleine, and Janine Bailly-Herzberg. "Daubigny." Paris: Éditions Geoffroy-Dechaume, 1975, p. 54-55]. The 1976 Daubigny catalogue raisonné lists only "Périer d'Epernay" in the provenance of this painting [Hellebranth, Robert. "Charles François Daubigny 1817-1878." Morges: Editions Matute, 1976, cat. 265]. Another publication refers to the sale of the painting from the artist to the député Périer d'Épernay [Moreau-Nélaton, Étienne. "Daubigny Raconté par lui-même." Paris: Henri Laurens, 1925, p. 83].
According to information provided to the Museum by Fred Bancroft, who facilitated the sale between Galerie de la Scala and the Museum, in 2007 the painting was still owned by the same family that bought it from the artist in the 1860s [email to the Museum from Fred Bancroft dated March 13, 2007, SLAM document files]. Galerie de la Scala also provided the Museum with a copy of a letter from the artist in Paris to the original owner (unnamed) dated January 11, 1867, regarding the sale of the painting [SLAM document files].
