NOTES
Small and childlike under her heavily lacquered hairdo, this maiko maintains a steady gaze and professional demeanor. During her apprenticeship, which might last five years, she would learn to entertain clients by watching senior geisha and perfecting her singing, dancing, or instrumental skills.
Yamamura Toyonari’s painting and printmaking practices were closely intertwined; several of his prints, including this portrait, began their lives as painting subjects. This print was released in two versions: one in which the geometric pattern of the maiko’s sash is embellished with metallic gold, as seen here; in the other, the fabric is black with a silvery glimmer.
