NOTES
Collectors in the 16th and 17th centuries coveted artwork designed by the sculptor Giambologna. This emotive figure of the dead Jesus may have been the artist’s most widely sold work. The elegant body, sensitive face, and carefully finished drapery folds are among its most beautiful features. The sculpture has been placed on a 20th-century wooden cross. The banner at the top, also a later addition, carries four letters (INRI) representing the first initials of the Latin words for Jesus, Nazareth, king, and Jews.
