NOTES
This terracotta bust was originally intended to look like bronze and was completely covered in dark brown paint with gold flecks. This painted finish was removed at some later date, perhaps the result of a modern preference for the color of natural terracotta.

The name of the emperor depicted here is not known nor are any clues provided that could help to determine his identity. When displayed in a study, the sculpture may have been accompanied by a sign or inscription; he may have even been part of a group of several known imperial figures. It is likely that the bust represents a ruler from ancient Roman history.
