NOTES
Likely dyed in pigments extracted from kola nuts and indigo using a stitch-resist method, this wrapper achieves a dramatic effect that resembles a topographical landscape. With this resist technique, the artist tightly stitched the pattern with thread so that dye would not penetrate those areas of cloth while cooking in the dye bath. Upon unstitching, the compacted fabric remained white in color. Multiple dye baths produced the cloth’s rich depth and variety of colors. Bill Siegmann collected this textile in Koindu, Sierra Leone, in 1968.
