NOTES
Does this portrait commemorate a marriage? St. Louis artist Siegfried Reinhardt painted this likeness of Jane Blackmer Wainwright in 1950, the year of her wedding. Her all-white attire—including the pearls on her neck and wrist—might hint at a bridal tradition. Yet, there is no ring visible on her finger, and the composition is curiously cropped at her hands.
The overhead light source casts dramatic shadows over Wainwright’s direct gaze and serious expression, adding an unsettling quality to this image. Reinhardt, recognized in 1950 as one of Life Magazine’s young American artists of the year, often painted surreal scenes in a hyperrealistic style, creating a psychological complexity in all his subjects.
