NOTES
The blue rings surrounding orange-colored ovals in this textile may call to mind target practice, but designer Maija Isola had something more benign in mind. Melooni, or “melon” in Finnish, is a further simplification of Isola’s already stylized Vesimelooni, a pink and green print of watermelons from 1963. Part of her Arkkitehti series for the Finnish fabric company Marimekko, Melooni’s striking bullseyes have a visual kinship to American abstract painting of the same period.
