NOTES
Eva Hesse developed a complex, multi-step process to create this small, hollow sculpture. She began by wrapping gauze-like tape dipped in liquid rubber around an inflated balloon. The artist made detailed notes of her working method: “Observations…1. leave balloon inside (attached) this causes wrinkles 2. cut only at ends 3. for extreme crumbled wrinkles—cut when wet.” The final work resulted from cutting the object when wet and letting it dry naturally. Its tubular shape as well as its membrane-like shell suggest the inner organs of the human body.
