NOTES
This image is one of a series of winter views Frits Thaulow produced of factories on the Akerselven River in Oslo, Norway. The reds of the buildings offset the whites of the snow and inky blackness of the water; a tiny figure crosses a bridge in the distance. Thaulow was the brother-in-law of Paul Gauguin, a friend of Claude Monet, and the central figure in an emerging Norwegian school of Impressionist landscape painting in the 1880s.
