        NOTES

The grid-covered skulls stacked across this canvas have appeared throughout Eddie Martinez’s paintings since 2005. He often combines these “blockheads” and other personal symbols with references to popular culture and 20th-century art history. Additionally, Martinez’s many drawings tacked up in his studio inspire works like Big BH Grid No. 1. When painting, he imitates the motions and characteristics of drawing on a larger scale, using bold outlines, scribbles, and bright colors over a white background. He frequently incorporates canvas scraps and other materials at hand.
