NOTES
In the center of this bowl, a lotus blooms and is surrounded by petals of the same flower. The artist achieved this effect by incising the pattern directly into the clay surface. The soft blue celadon glaze coating the work pooled in these grooves, allowing the design to stand out. This bowl was produced in Si Satchanalai, a capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom (1238–1438) in northern Thailand. The kilns established in the city were some of the most prolific in the region; ceramic wares were exported to Indonesia on a scale that rivaled those of China.
