Notes:
The main source for this provenance is Wildenstein's catalogue raisonné, cat. no. 1104 [Wildenstein, Daniel: "Claude Monet: biographie and catalogue raisonné." Lausanne: La Bibliothèque des arts, 1974-1991]. Exceptions and other supporting documents are noted.
[1] According to a letter written by Caroline Durand-Ruel Godfroy dated November 8, 2001, this painting was part of Paul Durand-Ruel's private collection and eventually Madame Jean d'Alayer, née Marie-Louise Durand-Ruel, granddaughter of Paul Durand-Ruel, inherited it. She lived in Neuilly-sur-Seine, very close to Paris. The painting was in the collection of Madame Jean d'Alayer by 1952 ["Claude Monet", 140 rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré. Paris: Wildenstein, 1952, cat. no. 50]. The invoice from Sam Salz to Joseph Pulitzer, dated December 15, 1964, indicates that the work comes from "Private Collection Durand-Ruel, Paris" [invoice, SLAM document files].
