NOTES
The elaborately decorated sword band, the embroidered shirt, and the finely-made satin lining of the cuffs show off the sitter’s wealth and taste. Few artists could match Gerard ter Borch’s facility in capturing the surface qualities of satin and lace, and he uses these talents to great effect in this beautiful portrait. While the sword band extends longer than Jacob de Graeff would have worn it in 17th-century Amsterdam, the family was extremely rich and may have encouraged the painter to emphasize their status in this way.
