NOTES
In this dynamic scene, angels warn Mary and Joseph to flee to Egypt with their infant, Jesus, to escape the wrath of King Herod. The sculpture might have been carved by Renaissance sculptor Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, who was known for his distinctive, angular folds of drapery. Centuries later, Alceo Dossena studied and mastered Amadeo’s style and may have produced it instead. Although the identity of the artist is still debated, this energetic relief demonstrates the enduring taste for Renaissance sculpture.
