NOTES
Strand was an important filmmaker as well as still photographer. He collaborated with the American artist Charles Sheeler in 1920 to produce "Manhatta," regarded as the first avant-garde film in America. Inspired by this experiment, Strand purchased his own motion picture camera and earned much of his living in the 1920s shooting news footage. He admired the precision of the camera and took a number of images of its inner mechanical workings. With extreme clarity, he generated nearly abstract compositions from the concentric gears, knobs, and reels.
