NOTES
Black bands outline fragmented forms of goldfish seen through a glass vessel. Roy Lichtenstein pares down his sculptural com-position to essential combinations of line and color. The work pays homage to Henri Matisse, whose painting style was considered radical in the early 20th century. Matisse depicted a similar fishbowl in multiple paintings. Resembling the stylized lines of a newspaper illustration, this sculpture blends references to high and low culture in an approach characteristic of Pop art.
