NOTES
With his left knee bent at a jaunty angle, a dancing sailor strums his guitar and moves in time to the music. Jacques Lipchitz drew inspiration from a summer spent in Majorca, Spain, where he carefully observed local sailors. The artist sculpted this work soon after meeting Pablo Picasso in 1913. The shifting facets and intersecting geometric forms of the sailor’s figure recall the compositional approach of Cubism. Lipchitz subsequently became the principal sculptor within the Cubist movement.
