NOTES
Abstract, graphic carpets inspired by 20th-century avant-garde art movements like this one were an important part of modern designer and architect Eileen Gray’s diverse body of work. In 1910, Gray established a workshop to produce her designs for rugs and wall hangings. Although this example was made in a small-scale factory late in Gray’s life, it reflects her early design principles—a limited color palette, geometric composition, and devotion to handcraft, in this case, hand-knotting.
