ST. LOUIS, Nov. 1, 2023 —Two popular holiday traditions return to the Saint Louis Art Museum next month. Winter Celebrations, a free, community-centered celebration of the season, will take place Dec. 9 and 10. Then on Dec. 30, the museum will host its annual Kwanzaa Celebration, which for more than 20 years has been one of the region’s largest Kwanzaa events.
Winter Celebrations is a drop-in event from 10 am to 4 pm each day and is inspired by holiday traditions from around the world. Activities will stretch throughout the museum, encouraging families to explore SLAM’s global collection. Suitable for all ages, Winter Celebrations will offer hands-on art activities such as artisan snowflake design and other art projects highlighting winter-themed artworks in the museum’s collection.
Performances include a winter-themed hip-hop performance in The Garage Lab by Saint Louis Story Stitchers Artists Collective, a dance performance by Hispanic Festival Inc., and winter storytelling from award-winning story performer and teaching artist Bobby Norfolk. In addition to two performances, Confluence Chamber Orchestra will host an instrument petting zoo. There will also be an ice sculptor and winter-themed photobooth opportunity sponsored by Saint Louis Art Museum Teen Arts Council. Performances and art activities will differ each day.
This program is supported by the Dana Brown Endowed Fund for Education and Community Programs.
Later in the month, the museum will host its annual Kwanzaa Celebration, themed “Ubuntu: I am Connected.” The free event will take place Dec. 30 from 10 am to 2 pm. Visitors will be able to participate in art-making activities and a self-guided tour and watch a dance performance in SLAM’s Farrell Auditorium. The event is presented in partnership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., St. Louis Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter.
